Last Wednesday, I received a message that was the scariest that I ever received. A message from my dad.
That day too, I received a freaky call from my aunt in the noon.
As usual, everyday I would visit my mom at the hospital during my lunch with Jon. She looks fine as my aunt came down from Klang to take care of her.
I went back to my office after visiting and an hour later, I received a call from my aunt. "Jo, can you take half day and come to hospital? Your mom suddenly get seizure and ... (I couldn't hear clearly as I got worried)" Quickly I went to my HR and applied for EL. I couldn't even explain to her when she asked what happened. Rushed all the way to hospital then.
Met my aunt and she told me mom.just got sedated. Apparently the docs were trying a new drug on her and they said it was suppose to help surpress her SLE.
Here goes my aunt's experience. Doctor started the medication at about 2something. My aunt even told my mom "They're putting in new drug for you ok?" "I know". So it started. Not even into one minute. Aunt explained mom was staring at her. Aunt asked if she wants water, mom gave a small nod. So she sip a little from the straw. But she was still staring. Aunt asked again. This time, mom's pupil suddenly looked to her far left edge of her eye (my aunt was sitting on right side).
Aunt quickly called for nurses and doctor and they stopped the medication. Then they lower down the dose and try again. Again, not even one minute, her pupils looked to left again and started to blink her left eye with force and started shouting that she want her doctor. Nurses try to calm her down, my aunt too but my mom insisted and her doctor came and stopped the medication then put her into sedative.
I reached hospital right after that and Doctor explained to me about her condition. He said her the water in her lungs got lesser which was a good news as he compared her scans from first day in ICU and latest one. However, doctor did told me that this drug has side effect, rashes, swelling and dizzy. Mom's was rare case. Other patients who were given this drug only showed those symptoms.
Anyway, later that afternoon they took her to CT Scan.
Bro came. Dad came. Mom was still asleep when I met up with Jon. Soon about an hour later, dad texted me to go stop whatever I'm doing and head back to UH. And the following text says "Doctor said prepare for worse". I rushed over immediately.
Mom was awake. Both my aunt and dad did not tell her what doctor said. Doctor showed my mom's xray and said that her lungs was 90% infected. Only 10% was working fine. Her right side of the brain was swollen and has minor bleeding.
I broke down when dad told me to go out of the ward to explain to me the situation. I couldnt be having mom to see me cried. So I linger at the lobby.
We stayed with her till 11pm. Way past visiting hours. Eric came down all the way from Johor.
We discussed our plan and both Eric and his wife took over to stay overnight when they reached at about 12am+.
We left hospital at 1am and I couldn't sleep well. I anxiously waited for Eric's update. I finally got a text at 4am. Neurologists said mom was stable. As relieved as I was, I still couldnt sleep.
And I still work another half day before I took an EL. I was relieved to see mom sat up and talked to us.
But we're still taking turns to take care of her over the night.
Today is my turn!
Hopefully she'll get better..
